Winter 2017 Issue

The fall semester was a busy one for the COMM Department. In October we hosted the annual COMM Internship fair where students have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with employers. More than 35 companies participated in this fall's internship fair. See event slideshow here. (You might recognize a few CofC COMM alumni on the other side of the tables interviewing the students.) If you are a local company looking to hire our students, please email commdept@cofc.edu to express your interest in participating in this annual fair. And, you can always feel free to email internship and job openings so we can further promote that to our COMM majors, minors, and alumni.

The Department’s Bully Pulpit Series led pre-and-post-election events for students, alumni, and community members. Students organized several days of Register to Vote efforts across campus in October. Post-election, the Bully Pulpit Series hosted two events –

  • Ballots & Brunch: A Review of the 2016 Presidential Election and Future of American Politics
    • This event was the signature academic event for the College’s Fall Alumni Weekend on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016. It featured keynote speaker Joe Klein, an award-winning political columnist for TIME Magazine and author of seven books including the best-selling Primary Colors. Joe spoke to three trends that influenced the 2016 election. Prior to the keynote address, two panels of distinguished guests provided insider insight, expert commentary and engaging discussion. See full listing of event participants here:

Summer 2016 Issue

The 2016 campaign season was an exciting and busy one for the Bully Pulpit Series. The Series played host to several candidates for president, local political debates, major events for national news outlets, and served as a vehicle for leading student voter registration efforts.

A few highlights of the season:

  • An episode of Showtime’s The Circus featured our Bully Pulpit event with Chelsea Clinton. See video here.
  • Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) made two campus appearances – one in November 2015 and the other in February 2016 – with impressive attendance at each event. CNN covered his November event while Sean Hannity's FOX News show came to campus to do a Cruz town hall.
  • CNN visited twice during the primary season and the coverage resulted in two different videos (one featuring COMM senior Erin Dempsey) as well as CNN’s largest-ever focus group (70 people).
