Major/Minor Requirements

This page describes the requirements of both the undergraduate major and minor. 

COMMUNICATION MAJOR

Please refer to course catalog for all requirements and pre-requisites. Major requirements listed below.

Major Requirements: 36 hours 

Required Core Courses (14 sem. hrs.):

COMM 214 & COMM 214D Media in the Digital Age (4 sem. hrs.)

COMM 215 Communication, Identity and Community (4 sem. hrs.)

COMM 216 Principles and Practices in Strategic Communication (3 sem. hrs.)

COMM 280/281 Introduction to Communication Messages (6 sem. hrs.)

Please note: this is a two-semester course.  Students will be automatically enrolled in the second section of the course during the registration period.  The course will be scheduled on the same day and times with the same professor both semesters.  Students who do not receive a C- or better in the first half of the course will be dropped from the continuing section after grades are reported.

COMM 301 Communication Research Methods (3 sem. hrs.)

COMM 310 Message Design and Influence (3 sem. hrs.)

Required Advanced Courses (22 sem. hrs.):

Please note: COMM 480/481 is a two-semester course.  Students will be automatically enrolled in the second section of the course during the registration period.  The course will be scheduled on the same day and times with the same professor both semesters. *Topics vary in course sections for 315, 336, 410, and 480/481.  For example, a student with a specific interest in digital media, public relations, or health communication might select course sections that specifically address her or his preferred area of specialization.  Please see the semester course schedule or the section listing for course topics in a specific semester, along with sample course schedules and other advice for professional and career preparation.

PLEASE NOTE: A grade of “C-” or better must be earned in any course used to fulfill a major or minor requirement in the Department of Communication.  

COMMUNICATION MINOR

Students in the communication minor must complete a minimum of six hours in 300- or 400-level communication courses.  At least nine hours in the minor at the 200 level or above must be earned at the College of Charleston.

Minor Requirement: 18-21 hours
